Everything Your Executor Needs to Find, in One Place
A guided personal records organizer for Canadians
Most people don’t think about what happens when they’re suddenly unable to explain where things are. Their executor does. So does their spouse, their adult child, or whoever ends up sitting at the kitchen table trying to piece together a picture of a life from a drawer full of paper.
In Plain Sight™ is a self-guided, interactive tool that helps you organize everything your executor and loved ones would need to find: financial accounts, legal documents, insurance policies, digital accounts, important locations, and more. When you’re done, you print it, put it somewhere safe, and tell someone where to find it.
Time: one sitting, or work through it section by section
Format: self-guided, interactive
Output: a clean printed document, ready to store with your important papers
Device: desktop, tablet, or mobile
What this is
In Plain Sight™ is a comprehensive personal records organizer that walks you through every category of information an executor typically needs to locate, with province-specific terminology throughout.
You’ll work through each section at your own pace, entering the details that matter: account numbers, document locations, the name of your veterinarian, what you’d like done with your social media accounts. Fields you don’t need can be left blank or marked not applicable. Sections like insurance, accounts, and debts aren’t limited to a fixed number of entries. Add as many as you need. When you’re finished, print a clean, organized document to store with your important papers and tell someone you trust where to find it.
Nothing you enter is stored online. Your information stays on your device until you choose to print it.
The tool is designed for people who are getting their affairs in order, and for the families and executors who benefit most when that work has been done.
What’s covered
- Personal information and identity documents
- Legal documents and named representatives, including your will, powers of attorney, and personal care directives, with province-specific document names and agent titles throughout
- Insurance policies of all types, and the professionals who manage your affairs
- Financial accounts: banking, registered accounts, investments, pension, business interests, and more
- Physical assets: real estate with ownership structure, vehicles, valuables, and storage
- Your digital life: devices, email, social media, and subscriptions, including your wishes for each
- Where things are: important locations, safe combinations, keys, and anything stored in a non-obvious place
- Final wishes, pets, and a freeform section for anything that doesn’t fit elsewhere
What this is not
- legal advice or a substitute for a lawyer
- financial, tax, or investment advice
- a password manager or secure vault
- a document drafting service
- a substitute for having the right documents in place
In Plain Sight™ helps you record and organize what exists. It doesn’t create documents or give advice on what should be in place. If you’re not sure your planning is complete, the NEXsteps planning toolkit has self-guided, jurisdiction-specific tools to help with that.
